One evening, I showed a carefully crafted technical blog post to an AI. "Grade this article on a scale of 100." The response came back: 72 points. "Inline citations are insufficient. No structured data present. Statistical evidence is weak." My pride was bruised, but curiosity took over. What criteria does AI use to evaluate writing? And are those criteria actually meaningful?
The search for answers led me into the world of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). And at the end of that journey, I ended up building my own GEO QA scoring system.
The Search Paradigm Is Shifting
Until 2024, content optimization meant SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Keyword density, backlink counts, meta tags — these metrics determined Google search rankings. Then generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini arrived and completely rewrote the rules of the game.
Users no longer scan through ten blue links. They ask AI a question and read the AI-generated answer. In this process, the AI references hundreds of web pages but cites only a select few in its final response. Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton analyzed the mechanisms by which content gets selected by AI in this new environment, coining the term GEO (Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," arXiv:2311.09735, 2023).
The study's key findings were remarkable. Content with inline citations saw a 30-40% increase in visibility within AI engines. Content incorporating statistical figures showed approximately 15-20% visibility improvement. And content written in an authoritative tone recorded significantly higher citation rates compared to typical blog posts.
Why does this matter? In the SEO era, you only had to satisfy one gatekeeper: Google. In the GEO era, multiple AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot — each evaluate and cite content differently. The time has come to redefine what universally "good content" means, rather than optimizing for a single strategy.
The 9 GEO Strategies: What Princeton Research Revealed
The Princeton research team proposed nine optimization strategies for GEO (Aggarwal et al., 2023). Let's examine each one and analyze how they apply to real-world writing.
The first is Cite Sources — inline citations. This doesn't mean simply listing references at the end of an article, but attributing sources within the body text in "[Researcher, Year]" format. AI engines judge content with inline citations as more trustworthy information sources. This mirrors academic citation practices, and because AI models trained on academic data recognize this pattern as a "signal of trust."
The second is Add Statistics. "Many companies are adopting AI" is far weaker than "According to Gartner, 40% of enterprises are projected to adopt AI agents by 2026" (Gartner, 2025). Concrete numbers create verifiable claims that AI can fact-check, which increases citation probability.
The third is Add Quotations. Including direct expert quotes elevates content authority. Lily Ray, a former Google search quality evaluator, stated, "E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) remains the most important content quality signal even in the AI era" (Search Engine Journal).
The fourth through ninth strategies cover keyword optimization, fluency improvement, technical terminology usage, authoritative tone, structured data, and readability enhancement. These strategies work independently but create synergies when combined. According to the Princeton research, combining inline citations with statistics produced approximately 115% visibility improvement compared to individual strategies.
Here's the crucial insight: these nine strategies are ultimately no different from "principles of good writing." Attributing sources, backing claims with data, citing expert opinions, and structuring for readability — these were fundamentals of good journalism and academic writing long before AI existed. GEO doesn't demand something new; it quantifies the standards of "good content" that already existed.
From 72 to 91 Points: A Real Scoring Case Study
To verify the theory, I ran my own experiment. I wrote two versions of an article on the same topic — one in a "typical blog post" style and another applying GEO strategies.
The topic was "The Present and Future of AI Coding Agents." The first version began: "There are many AI tools helping with coding these days. Tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude are boosting developer productivity." No citations, no statistics, no structured data. The AI gave it 72 points.
The second version rewrote the same content with GEO strategies: "According to GitHub's 2024 Developer Survey, 92% of developers use AI coding tools, with 70% naming GitHub Copilot as their primary tool (GitHub Developer Survey 2024)." This version scored 91 points.
Analyzing the differences between the two versions reveals interesting patterns. The largest contributor to the score gap was the presence of inline citations. The 72-point version had zero citations; the 91-point version contained seven. The second-largest factor was the use of specific numbers. "Many developers" and "92% of developers" occupy entirely different dimensions of information credibility.
However, not all GEO strategies produced equal effects. The impact of keyword optimization was relatively minimal. AI engines value semantic relevance over keyword stuffing. Conversely, fluency — the naturalness and logical flow of sentences — had a larger-than-expected impact. This suggests AI prefers content that "reads well."
What Is a GEO QA System?
After learning about GEO strategies, a natural question emerged: "I can't manually check all these criteria every time I write something." That question became the starting point for the GEO QA (Quality Assurance) system.
GEO QA is a system that automatically evaluates a piece of content's GEO optimization level. Feed it an article, and it scores against multiple criteria while providing specific improvement suggestions. Think of it not as a simple spell checker, but as a tool that predicts "AI citation likelihood."
At HypeProof, we applied this concept to our actual content pipeline. After writing a column or research article, a GEO QA script runs automatically to generate a score. Below 70 signals the need for revision before publication; above 85 indicates high-quality content likely to be cited by AI engines.
The scoring criteria divide into five areas. First is Citation Density — whether at least two inline citations per 1,000 words are present. Let me share how HypeProof Lab adopted the GEO QA system. Our content pipeline works as follows: a Creator drafts an article, then an AI agent runs the GEO QA script. The script parses the Markdown file, analyzing inline citation count, structural elements, statistics inclusion, and more, returning a score out of 100.
The script's mechanics in brief: it reads a Markdown file and extracts inline citation patterns ([text](URL) format) via regex. It analyzes the count and hierarchy of H2 and H3 headers. It checks for the presence of structured elements like code blocks, tables, and images. And it counts total words to determine whether minimum thresholds are met.
Initially, the scoring criteria were too strict, and most articles landed in the 60s. We adjusted the inline citation threshold from "3 per 1,000 words" to "2 per 1,000 words" and changed tables from a requirement to bonus points in the structure score, gradually finding realistic benchmarks. Through this process, I learned something important: GEO QA shouldn't be a tool that enforces "perfect writing" but a guide toward "better writing."

Practical Tips for Raising Your GEO Score
If you've read this far, you're probably wondering, "So how do I actually raise my score?" Here are practical tips from three weeks of experimentation.
The most effective approach is building the habit of a "claim-evidence" pattern. Every time you make a claim, support it with data or citation in the very next sentence. Instead of writing "AI search is growing," write "According to StatCounter's 2025 data, market share for AI-based search increased 340% year-over-year" (StatCounter Global Stats, 2025).
The second tip is maintaining a narrative structure while naturally weaving in data. Bullet-point lists are easy to read but make it harder for AI engines to grasp context. "A happened, which led to B, ultimately producing C" scores higher than "A. B. C."
The third tip is sparking reader curiosity in the introduction. While not directly addressed in the Princeton study, our internal experiments showed that content with question-based introductions achieved 8-12% higher visibility on average. This is likely because AI engines better match content that includes "answerable questions."
The fourth is leveraging metadata. Schema.org markup, Open Graph tags, and structured frontmatter help AI quickly understand a piece's topic and context (Schema.org Article Specification). AEO and GEO: Two Related but Distinct Concepts
Any GEO discussion inevitably brings up AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). The two concepts are closely related but differ in focus. AEO centers on "getting my content selected as AI's answer" (Search Engine Journal, "Answer Engine Optimization"). GEO encompasses the broader goal of "increasing my content's visibility across AI engines."
In practice, the two strategies largely overlap. Structured data, inline citations, clear answer formats — these elements are effective for both AEO and GEO. The difference lies in AEO targeting "position zero" — Featured Snippets or AI Overviews — while GEO addresses the wider context of AI models learning from or referencing content through RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation).
HypeProof's approach integrates both concepts. When content is written from the start in a form "AI would want to reference," it performs well across SEO, AEO, and GEO alike. This ultimately converges on the same conclusion: "writing that's also good for humans to read."
How Writing Changes in the AI Era
A persistent thought kept surfacing as I wrote this article. Could GEO optimization ultimately lead to the homogenization of writing? If every article follows a formula of five inline citations, three statistics, and five H2 headers, won't writing lose its individuality?
The concern is valid, but history shows similar patterns. When SEO first emerged, critics argued that "matching keyword density makes writing unnatural." Over time, SEO evolved toward creating "content that's good for both search engines and humans." I believe GEO will follow the same path. Formulaic optimization may be visible in the early stages, but the system will eventually converge toward a structure where inherently good content also gets chosen by AI.
Researchers at MIT Media Lab predicted that "content consumption in the AI era will be evaluated along two axes: 'accuracy of information' and 'appeal of narrative'" (MIT Media Lab, "Future of Content Consumption," 2025). Pursuing only accuracy produces an encyclopedia; pursuing only narrative produces a novel. What GEO QA aims for is the intersection of these two axes — writing that is both accurate and engaging.
Closing: The Score Is Just the Beginning
My writing score started at 72 and now averages around 87. But there's a change more important than numbers. I've developed the habit of asking myself, "What's the evidence for this claim?" while writing.
