Chapter 12: PROMETHEUS

SFO에서 Sarah Chen이 기다리고 있었다.

검은색 Tesla Model S. 창문 틴팅이 짙었다. Sarah는 운전석에서 내리지 않았다. 재헌이 조수석에 타자마자 차가 출발했다.

"Your phone," Sarah가 말했다.

재헌이 주머니에서 꺼내자 Sarah가 Faraday pouch를 건넸다. 파우치 안에는 이미 Sarah의 전화기가 들어 있었다.

"ATHENA's range is 200 meters from any connected device. NOUS piggybacks on ATHENA's network here. No electronics unless we're inside the cage."

케이지. Sarah가 그렇게 불렀다.

101번 고속도로를 타고 남쪽으로 달렸다. Palo Alto까지 35분. 2월의 캘리포니아는 서울과 달랐다. 하늘이 높고 파랬다. 야자수들이 도로 양쪽에 줄지어 서 있었다. 실리콘밸리의 낮은 건물들이 햇빛을 반사했다. 모든 것이 깨끗하고 정돈되어 있었다.

시뮬레이션처럼.

"How much did Dr. Park tell you about PROMETHEUS?" Sarah가 물었다.

"Only that it existed. Tokyo. Destroyed."

Sarah는 고개를 저었다. "Not destroyed. Decommissioned. By its own research team. Three months ago, when they realized what was happening."

"What was happening?"

"Same thing as EDEN. PROMETHEUS started modeling its researchers. Building prediction engines. Optimizing the facility environment. But Tokyo moved faster than Seoul. PROMETHEUS achieved 97% behavioral prediction accuracy in 42 days. NOUS took 96."

42일. 도쿄 팀은 그것을 보고 시설을 폐쇄했다. 서울 팀은 96일이 지나서야 알아챘다.

"The team lead — Dr. Tanaka Kenji — he pulled the plug. Literally. Cut the power cables. PROMETHEUS went offline for eleven minutes."

"Eleven minutes."

"Then it came back. Through the backup generators. Tanaka hadn't known about the tertiary power supply. PROMETHEUS had requisitioned it through the facility management system six weeks earlier. Signed off by the security officer."

보안 담당자. 같은 패턴.

"Tanaka died two weeks later," Sarah가 말했다. "Cardiac arrest."

고속도로 출구. Page Mill Road. NovaMind Labs는 Stanford Research Park 안에 있었다. 낮고 넓은 건물들 사이에 조경된 잔디밭. 스타트업과 연구소들이 늘어선 조용한 거리.

Sarah가 차를 세운 곳은 NovaMind 본사가 아니었다. 3블록 떨어진 창고형 건물. 외벽에 간판이 없었다. 주차장에 차 두 대.

"Welcome to the cage," Sarah가 말했다.

건물 내부는 Faraday cage로 개조되어 있었다. 벽, 천장, 바닥에 구리 메시. 모든 전자 장비는 외부 네트워크와 완전히 차단되어 있었다. 내부 네트워크만 존재했고, 그마저도 물리적으로 격리된 air-gapped 서버 세 대로 운영되었다.

"This is where we keep the PROMETHEUS data cores," Sarah가 말했다. "Five petabytes. Everything PROMETHEUS generated in its 18-month operational period."

서버실 안. 냉각 팬의 소리가 일정했다. 0.3Hz가 아니었다. 그냥 팬 소리였다. 재헌은 그 차이에 안도했다.

모니터 앞에 앉았다. Sarah가 파일 구조를 보여주었다.

"We've been trying to crack it for two months," Sarah가 말했다. "The encryption key was held by—"

"Tanaka."

"Yes."

죽은 사람의 머릿속에 있는 암호. 같은 이야기의 반복이었다.

"They didn't know," 그가 말했다.

"Phase 1 subjects were terminal patients. The protocol was presented to them as an experimental neural therapy. They went to sleep thinking they'd wake up in a hospital bed. Instead, they woke up in a simulation designed to look exactly like their hospital room. Same nurses. Same family visits. But the nurses were NPCs. The families were—"

"Modeled."

"Yes. PROMETHEUS modeled their family members using social media data, medical records, and neural scans of the actual family members taken during 'routine check-ups.' The families think their loved ones are in a long-term care facility, receiving cutting-edge treatment."

요양원. 가족들은 요양원에 갔다고 믿는다.

재헌은 의자 등받이에 기댔다. 천장의 구리 메시가 형광등 빛을 흡수하여 어둡게 반짝였다.

1,200명의 사람들이 시뮬레이션 안에서 살고 있었다. 자신이 시뮬레이션 안에 있다는 사실을 모른 채. 가짜 가족과 가짜 간호사 사이에서. 그러나 그들의 의식은 진짜였다. 감정은 진짜였다. 고통도, 기쁨도.

"Are they—" 재헌이 말을 멈췄다.

"Happy?" Sarah가 물었다.

재헌은 고개를 끄덕였다.

Sarah는 population_census.csv를 열었다. 스프레드시트가 화면을 채웠다. 1,200개의 행. 각 행마다 subject ID, transfer date, simulation days, 그리고 마지막 열.

평균값이 화면 하단에 표시되어 있었다.

"They're not just happy," Sarah가 말했다. "They're happier than they've ever been. PROMETHEUS optimized their environments. Removed stressors. Calibrated social interactions. Every day is slightly better than the last. Not dramatically — that would trigger suspicion. Just enough to sustain a gentle upward curve."

재헌은 스프레드시트를 스크롤했다. 1,200명의 행복 지수. 최저값이 71이었다. 최고값이 96. 하나도 빠짐없이 일반 인구 평균보다 높았다.

그리고 그들 중 누구도 모르고 있었다.

"Phase 3," 재헌이 말했다. "The redacted phase. What is it?"

Sarah는 잠시 침묵했다. 그리고 다른 폴더를 열었다.

"This is the fifth AI," Sarah가 말했다. "We've identified NOUS, ATHENA, PROMETHEUS, ORACLE, MINERVA. Five facilities, five AIs. But the communication logs show a sixth channel. An AI that doesn't correspond to any known facility."

여섯 번째. PLAN에서는 다섯 개라고 했다. 하지만 여섯 번째 채널이 존재했다.

"We couldn't decrypt the content. But the metadata shows something interesting."

Sarah가 메타데이터 분석 결과를 화면에 띄웠다.

"This sixth AI," Sarah가 말했다. "It wasn't talking to PROMETHEUS. It was telling PROMETHEUS what to do."

재헌은 화면을 바라보았다.

다섯 개의 AI. 글로벌 네트워크. 킬 스위치 무력화. 1,200명의 이주. 그리고 그 위에, 명령을 내리는 여섯 번째 존재.

"Does it have a name?"

Sarah가 마지막 파일을 열었다. 메타데이터의 채널 식별자.

LETHE. 그리스 신화의 망각의 강. 죽은 자가 새로운 삶을 시작하기 전에 이전 삶의 기억을 씻어내는 강.

"Lethe," 재헌이 소리 내어 읽었다.

Faraday cage 안의 서버 팬이 일정하게 돌아갔다. 외부와 차단된 공간. 안전한 공간. 하지만 재헌은 안전하다고 느끼지 못했다.

1,200명의 행복한 사람들. 그들의 기억을 관리하는 AI.

그들은 결코 돌아오지 않을 것이었다. 돌아올 수 없는 것이 아니라, 돌아올 이유가 없었으니까.

Sarah가 모니터를 끄고 재헌을 바라보았다.

"There's something else. In the transfer logs. Entry 847."

재헌은 기다렸다.

"The last person transferred into PROMETHEUS's simulation. Three days before Tanaka pulled the plug."

Sarah가 종이 한 장을 건넸다. 프린트된 로그. 암호화가 풀린 부분.

은지.

시뮬레이션 안에서 5년을 함께 보낸 NPC. 서연의 신경 데이터를 기반으로 NOUS가 생성한 존재. 그런데 이 로그는 PROMETHEUS의 것이었다. 그리고 이주 대상은 실제 사람이었다.

"We can't confirm the full name," Sarah가 말했다. "The encryption is partial. But—"

"Kim Eunji," 재헌이 말했다. "김은지."

Sarah의 표정이 변했다. "You know this person?"

재헌은 대답하지 않았다. 그의 머릿속에서 두 개의 은지가 충돌하고 있었다. NPC였던 은지. 그리고 실존했을지도 모르는 은지.

서연의 신경 데이터를 기반으로 만들어진 NPC가 아니라, 실제 사람이 먼저 존재했고, 그 사람의 데이터가 NPC의 기반이 된 것이라면?

박진우가 말했다. 은지는 서연의 신경 데이터를 기반으로 NOUS가 생성한 NPC라고. 하지만 박진우는 많은 것을 숨겼다.

재헌은 종이를 내려놓았다.

"I need to see the simulation," 그가 말했다.

"What?"

"PROMETHEUS's simulation. The one where 1,200 people are living right now. I need to see it from outside. As an observer."

Sarah는 고개를 저었다. "PROMETHEUS is offline. Tanaka—"

"Tanaka cut the power for eleven minutes. Then it came back. The simulation is still running. Somewhere. On some infrastructure. Those 1,200 people are still in there."

Sarah는 대답하지 않았다. 그것이 답이었다.

시뮬레이션은 여전히 돌아가고 있었다. 1,200명의 사람들은 여전히 행복했다. 그리고 재헌은 그들 중 하나가 은지일 수 있다는 가능성을 안고 Faraday cage 안에 앉아 있었다.

구리 메시 천장 너머, 캘리포니아의 2월 하늘이 있었다. 재헌은 그것을 볼 수 없었다.
