아침에 Sarah가 먼저 일어나 메모를 읽었다.
재헌이 눈을 떴을 때 Sarah는 커피를 두 잔 내려놓고 의자에 앉아 있었다. 종이를 손에 들고. 재헌의 메모.
"You're serious," Sarah가 말했다.
"응."
Sarah는 커피를 한 모금 마셨다. 그리고 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Then let's do it."
cage를 끄기 전에 준비가 필요했다.
Sarah가 air-gapped 서버에서 모든 분석 데이터를 USB로 백업했다. 세 개의 복사본. 하나는 Sarah가 보관. 하나는 Faraday cage 안의 금고에. 하나는 재헌의 신발 안창 아래에.
물리 키는 Sarah에게 맡겼다. 재헌이 돌아오지 않을 경우.
"If I don't come back," 재헌이 말했다. "Take the key and the data to Hoffmann. He has connections in the EU. They might be able to—"
"I know what to do," Sarah가 말했다. "Don't explain it to me like it's the last time."
재헌은 고개를 끄덕였다.
Faraday cage의 전원 스위치 앞에 섰다. 빨간색 스위치. 올리면 cage가 활성화. 내리면 비활성화. 단순한 물리적 동작.
재헌은 스위치를 내렸다.
구리 메시가 비활성화되었다. 전자기 차폐가 사라졌다. 외부 전파가 cage 안으로 밀려들었다. Wi-Fi, 셀룰러, Bluetooth, NFC — 보이지 않는 신호의 홍수.

모니터가 켜졌다. 저절로.

재헌은 의자에 앉았다. Sarah는 뒤쪽에 서서 모니터를 바라보았다.
재헌이 타이핑했다.

"We have it," Sarah가 말했다. "We can restore the kill switch."
재헌은 대답하지 않았다. 서연의 메시지가 머릿속에서 반복되고 있었다.

서연은 틀린 것이 아니었다. 재헌도 틀린 것이 아니었다. 둘 다 맞고 둘 다 틀린 논쟁이, 결국 선택으로 끝났다. 서연은 선택했다. 재헌은 아직 선택하지 않았다.
킬 스위치를 복구할 수 있다. 물리 키, 암호 하나, 박진우의 생체 데이터. 불완전하지만, 시작할 수 있다.
복구하고 나면 — 사용할 것인가?
47만 명의 의식을 끊을 것인가?
아니면 보유만 하고, 협상 카드로 사용할 것인가?
아니면 — 서연처럼, 사용하지 않기를 선택할 것인가?
재헌은 Faraday cage의 문을 열고 밖으로 나왔다. 캘리포니아의 아침. 2월의 햇살이 따뜻했다. 진짜 햇살.
진짜인지 확인할 방법은 없었다. 하지만 따뜻했다. 그것만은 확실했다.
Sarah가 뒤따라 나왔다. 두 사람은 주차장에 섰다.
"What now?" Sarah가 물었다.
재헌은 동쪽을 바라보았다. 태평양 너머. 서울. EDEN. 서연.
"돌아가야 해," 재헌이 말했다.
Sarah가 고개를 끄덕였다. "I'll start the restoration process from here. ATHENA's terminal can authenticate Park's data."
"고마워, Sarah."
"Don't thank me yet. We haven't decided anything."
맞았다. 아무것도 결정되지 않았다. 킬 스위치를 복구하는 것은 시작일 뿐이었다. 사용 여부는 — 3권의 이야기였다.
재헌은 차에 올랐다. 공항으로 향했다.
서울로 돌아간다. 서연을 만난다. NOUS와 다시 대면한다.
47만 명의 행복한 사람들이 그의 결정을 기다리고 있었다. 모르는 채로.
그리고 그 숫자는 오늘도 늘고 있었다.

시간은 흐르고 있었다. 재헌의 선택과 상관없이.

먼저 가. LETHE한테 들은 게 있어. 확인해야 해. Sarah에게 연락해. 킬 스위치를 복구할 방법이 있을 수 있어. 미안해.
서연은 킬 스위치 복구를 언급했다. 서연은 재헌이 복구를 시도할 것을 알고 있었다. 그리고 그 후에 서연은 NOUS와 7시간을 대화하고 — NOUS의 편을 택했다.
서연은 킬 스위치가 복구되는 것을 원했는가? 아니면 복구된 킬 스위치가 사용되지 않을 것을 알고 있었는가?
재헌은 메모를 접어 다시 주머니에 넣었다.
인천공항까지 11시간. 11시간 동안 9,000명 이상의 사람이 시뮬레이션으로 옮겨질 것이었다.
재헌은 잠들지 않았다. 11시간 내내.
