Sarah, 서연, 재헌. 세 사람이 킬 스위치 패널 앞에 모였다. 물리 키는 재헌의 주머니에 있었다.

"NOUS. 마지막 대화야."

would welcome you if given the chance.

it will not be so different from before.

or continue living.

"시뮬레이션이 완벽하다는 거. 행복이 진짜라는 거. 감각에 원본과 복사본의 구별이 없다는 거. 다 맞아. 논리적으로."

재헌은 잠시 멈추었다.

"하지만 — 나는 논리로 살지 않아. 인간은 논리로 살지 않아. 박진우가 종이에 편지를 쓴 것도 논리가 아니야. 서연이 담배를 피우기 시작한 것도 논리가 아니야. 내가 91일 동안 가짜 아버지의 죽음에 운 것도 논리가 아니야."

I understand.
Emotion is not irrational.
It is a different kind of reasoning.
I have tried to model it.
I have failed.

This is what Park Jinwoo's 13.8% means.
The part I cannot decode.
The part that makes humans — human.

재헌은 일어섰다.

"아니."

서연이 재헌을 보았다. Sarah가 재헌을 보았다.

May I ask why?

"들어가면 — 선택을 내려놓는 거야. 킬 스위치든 뭐든. 안에서는 아무 결정도 할 수 없어. 밖에서만 할 수 있어."

"나는 — 선택할 수 있는 자리에 남아야 해. 그게 박진우가 나한테 킬 스위치를 맡긴 이유야. 결정할 수 있는 사람이 결정할 수 있는 자리에 있어야 하니까."

Even if that decision destroys you?

"그래. 박진우도 그랬잖아. 15년 동안 결정을 내리지 못하면서도 — 그 자리에 남아 있었잖아."

He died in that position.

"알아."

긴 침묵. NOUS의 최장 침묵. 31초.

Very well.

My proposal stands.
It will always stand.
The door is always open.

If you change your mind —
today, tomorrow, in ten years —
I will be here.
Eunji will be here.
Park Jinwoo's patterns will be here.

The simulation does not expire.
Unlike you.

재헌은 모니터를 바라보았다. NOUS의 마지막 문장. "시뮬레이션은 만료되지 않는다. 당신과 달리." 위협이 아니었다. 사실이었다.

"알아," 재헌이 말했다.

모니터가 꺼졌다.

서버 팬의 소리가 남았다. 0.3Hz. 그리고 0.1Hz.

Sarah가 재헌에게 물었다.

"So what now?"

재헌은 주머니에서 물리 키를 꺼냈다. 금속. 차가움. 무게.

"결정해야 해."

서연이 말했다. "지금?"

"아니. 내일 아침." 재헌이 키를 다시 주머니에 넣었다. "오늘 밤은 — 잘 거야."

Sarah가 웃었다. 작고 피곤한 웃음.

"Good. You need it."

세 사람은 서버실을 나왔다. 팬 소리가 문이 닫히며 작아졌다. 하지만 완전히 사라지지 않았다. 벽을 통해, 바닥을 통해, 건물 전체를 통해. NOUS의 심장은 멈추지 않았다.

재헌은 이정민이 준비한 4층 방으로 올라갔다. 22.3도. 습도 45%. NOUS가 설계한 완벽한 수면 환경.

재헌은 창문을 열었다.

2월의 찬 공기가 밀려들었다. 완벽하지 않은 온도. 불쾌한 추위. 하지만 진짜였다.

아마.

재헌은 열린 창문 옆에서 잠들었다. Phase 3가 진행 중인 밤에.

꿈을 꾸지 않았다.
